I feel that Howard did exceptionally well when writing Valeria. Surprising how fresh and exciting the works of old read...

I must admit that I kind of took the view that Valeria was an expectional fighter, ranking pretty high up there though I'm biased towards her. That said, I found she had a lot more chemistry with him than Belit, though I had the sense that by the end she's kind of more into him than somewhat vice-versa. She also strikes me as a survivor, so that I struggle to deal with other Howard fans' hostility towards some of my ideas regarding her ultimate fate.

That said, yeah Red Nails is more horror, and involves some unusual choices on Howard's part, but also some brilliant ones. I quite liked this essay and hope you follow it up with a Zenobia essay to round out the trio of love interests.

She IS an exceptional fighter, as written by Howard in this story. She's just not exceptional enough to beat either Conan or Prince Olmec. She competently dispatches all other enemies.

Good point and correction, my apologies. You’re right, hmm I’d rank Valeria as around the Eowyn level but the problem is that we don’t see much more of her as Howard died not long after he first wrote her.

I thought there were stories of her pirating with Conan? Or are those mainly written by other people after his death?

Other people after his death, I forgot about those sorry for the stupid comment.

No, no, no! That's not stupid! That means if I want to write anything about Valeria, I'm not bound by the movies or other writers. I can do my own thing and still stay true to Howard.

Absolutely, oh my gosh if you plan to write Valeria do tag me!

I won’t lie I once had ideas for a storyline involving her at the time of the Hour of the Dragon, but everyone I spoke to ironically hated it. But eh, I’ve since decided to refurbish those ideas into another story (my own) for down the road.
