I really didn't know the story. When he taunted her to come off her horse, I thought, "uh oh, he's toast." But then he didn't get down to fight her. He stayed on his horse and went the other way! I was NOT expecting that, at ALL. Real genre savvy move. I laughed out loud when I read that, and really felt sorry for him. Of course, Virgil doesn't approve of trickery, or running away, but still.
The guy I felt the worst for, though, was Arruns, who got the dirty job of killing her, and he didn't even get buried.
Camilla herself got a suitable hero's death, which she earned, so she was fine. She lived and died as she wished, and was suitably honored for it.
Honestly I blame more Apollo least he could do is protect a man who prayed to him for protection but he is what he is.
