Homer's listeners did love his info dumps. "So and so, son of So and so, raised up in the district of So and so, fought bravely that day, going down to meet his ancestors."

I can see those warrior listening to the tale. *That guy was from our district. Yeah, he was a total bad@$$.* ๐Ÿ˜

Absolutely. And then the listeners would add their own local stories. And Homer would add those in. Homer's lists are an oral history equivalent, I think, of the Roman epitaphs. With more detail.

I love your example of the warriors. I was thinking of the women's mourning formulas, but it makes sense there would be input from both.
